CJ and Rex Talk about Ticks and Fleas

Hi y’all! CJ here, and I’ve got my good pal, Rex, with me! This month we want to talk to you about fleas and ticks.  We're excited spring is right around the corner because we love spending time outside. The only thing that annoys us about the warm weather is all of the bugs!!

Rex: Woof woof, yuck! I hate bugs, especially when they get in my food bowl!

CJ: Oh Rex, you’re always talking about food.

Rex: Woof woof yeah, it’s my favorite.

CJ: Well, Rex last year I got ticks AND fleas. It was terrible. I was itchy all of the time. Plus, ticks scare me. They carry a lot of diseases.

Rex: I didn’t have any fleas or ticks last year. Woof woof!

CJ: WHAT! How did you manage not to have any ticks or fleas last year!?

Rex: Simple! My mom brought me over to see Dr. Kothmann at Bulverde Animal Hospital. He put me on medicine. Woof woof! Ticks and fleas hate medicine, so they stayed away from me all spring and summer.

CJ: Oh wow – that’s good to know. We need to have your mom tell my mom this can be prevented. Before the warm weather hits, I’ll head on over to Bulverde Animal Hospital for some preventative medication.

Why is it Warm Out?

Hi y’all! CJ here, and as always, I have my buddy Rex with me. “Woof woof – hi! I’m hungry. Do you have any treats?” Oh Rex, no I don’t – if you want we will swing by Bulverde Animal Hospital later to see if they have any dog treats for you. “Woof, woof sounds good!”

Alright, now that we have treat talk out of the way, let’s get into why we’re really here today – it’s warm out! Usually at this time of year I’d be sitting inside by the fireplace, maybe catching a mouse or two in the basement, but not this year! The other day it was 70 degrees outside! It was so warm I was chasing mice in the fields next to my house. Rex, have you noticed a difference? “Yup, it’s warm – I like it. Woof woof! The warmness is making me itchy, I don’t like that.” Itchy? Rex, do you think you might have fleas? It’s definitely warm enough outside for them to be making an appearance! “Uh oh, yikes! I think I do, woof woof!” Oh Rex, it’s okay, just have your mom bring you over to Bulverde Animal Hospital. They will have you feeling like new again in a few days! “Woof woof, okay. Do you think it will be cold this summer?” Well, Rex at the pace things are going right now I don’t know what to expect!

Flea Season Continues for CJ and Rex

Hi there, CJ here, and I’ve got my pal Rex with me! You might remember us from last month. We were telling you about flea bites and how awful they are. Hey Rex, remember last month I told you to have your mom bring you to see Dr. Kothmann for flea medicine? Did she ever do that? “Yup! I’ve been feeling A- Okay for a few weeks!” said Rex. Wait, what medicine did Dr. Kothmann give you? I’m surprised you’re feeling better so fast! Rex said, “Ummmm I don’t know, it begins with an A, but it’s a big word, so I have trouble saying it (Rex’s face turns bright red).” It’s okay Rex, I’ve got my handy dandy i-Pad with me today, I “borrowed” it from my human brother, shhhh! Let’s do some research and see what we find.

Rex, what’s so good about this medicine? Does it do things other medicines don’t? That will help me find it. “Well, my mom only has to give it to me once a month, big relief, woof! It also dries really quickly, so I can start playing as soon as my mom puts it on me. It doesn’t smell, so I don’t sneeze from it, and it’s waterproof, so I’m still allowed to play in the creek, woof woof!”said Rex. “Oh and one other thing, it works super-fast! I haven’t been itchy in weeks! said Rex. Wait, that’s enough, I found it! It’s a medicine called activyl. It seems like the perfect flea fighting medicine.

Well, Rex I learned a lot today! I’m going to tell all of my furry friends to visit Dr. Kothmann for activyl. He’s the best and activyl will get rid of those nasty fleas in no time!
