Toxic Blue-Green Algae

During the dog days of summer, a common threat to animal safety is from overheating and dehydration since the weather causes health risk. There’s another threat to dog safety, however, and it may not be one that you would expect.

CJ here, joined by my friend Rex! Today we’re talking about a shocking threat to canine health that you may not be aware of; toxic blue-green algae. Dogs have become fatally ill after swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds after ingesting water that is laden with this stuff.  Because of that, these intense blooms have led to swimming bans from lakes in the Pacific Northwest to the entire Mississippi seacoast, to Lake Hopatcong. This alga is a very serious threat to us dogs.

Rex: Toxic blue-green algae sounds so scary, CJ… Can you tell me more about it? I don’t want to go swimming anymore; even though it’s one of my very favorite activities.

CJ: It is incredibly scary, Rex – and it’s in your best interest to take up a new hobby! Woof, woof! This stuff is known as cyanobacteria and this type of algae that is often found in lakes and ponds. Algal blooms, which are common this time of year, are a big cause for the presence of aquatic plants.

Rex: BARK. I don’t like this stuff; what does this alga do, exactly?

CJ: This alga is deadly to animals because they ingest large amounts of water, unlike humans. These algal blooms release toxins that take on a wide variety of effect such as causing liver damage, seizures, panting, excessive drooling, diarrhea, vomiting, respiratory paralysis, and even untimely death.

Rex: Death?! This is awful!

CJ: It absolutely is; WOOF. Unfortunately, there have been several reported cases of death in dogs after they’ve been swimming in contaminated water – there have even been a few reported cases in our area.

*CJ & Rex take a moment of silence*

Rex: So, what should owners look out for next time they go to a river, pond, or lake?

CJ: Some people have described these blooms as foam-like or similar to spilled paint. Despite the name, the color of this algae can also appear as red or brown, in addition to the more common blue-green color. These blooms give off a smell that is pungent to humans, but us dogs don’t really mind it.

Rex: I see… So, if we don’t see this green or red layer on the surface of our favorite place to swim, does that mean we can still swim in it?

CJ: I wouldn’t be so sure – woof! Sometimes, algal blooms can appear to have dissipated, but the harmful toxins are still present in the water.

Rex: That’s frightening… what can our parents do to protect us?

CJ: For starters, dogs should never be allowed near any water that is clearly contaminated with algae since drinking or swimming in it puts them at immediate risk. So immediate, in fact, that the dog may not make it to the vet without experiencing serious symptoms.

Rex: woof, woof – sounds like we shouldn’t be swimming in any bodies of water unless we’re sure that it’s safe; I know I don’t want to take the risk!

CJ: That’s exactly right, Rex! There are health departments that do perform testing to be sure about the safety of the water and will post signs of caution when the test shows positive. But if you’re not able to be certain, avoid that water completely! Also, dogs should always be rinsed off well after a swim, just to be super careful.

Rex: I’m glad I now know more about this! I think I may take up more games of fetch in my backyard where there isn’t any water.

CJ: Good idea, Rex – and for dogs that do have ponds in their backyard, this deadly algae can also grow there too, so their parent should keep a close eye and even block off the area for safe measure.

Toxic blue-green alga is very serious, but the more you learn about this threat and how to prevent it from affecting your dog, the safer your family will feel. If you feel that your pet may be at risk, or if you have any questions, contact the professionals at Bulverde Animal Hospital today.

How to Keep your Pet's Dental Care on Track

Hi everyone! CJ & Rex here with our good friend Whiskers who has surprised us with another visit! We’re here to share some important information about dental hygiene because having dirty, smelly teeth is nothing to smile about! Dental health is a very important part of our overall health, wouldn’t you agree, Rex?

Rex: Woof. Unfortunately, yes CJ. I hate when my mom brushes my teeth, but I do feel cleaner once it’s done!

CJ:
That’s great, Rex - woof! Your teeth should also be cleaned at least once a year by your certified veterinarian, like Dr. Kothmann, to check for early signs of problems and to keep your mouth healthy. If left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup can progress to painful inflammation and gums disease. You wouldn’t want that, right Whiskers?

Whiskers:
Meow – nope! But even worse, you’ll have bad breath!

CJ:
That’s why it’s really important for our parents to brush our teeth two to three times a week to prevent this from happening! Also, plaque builds up and bacteria can infect the gum tissue and even the roots of teeth, which will result in tooth loss. This can end up affecting more than our oral health - bacteria can travel though the bloodstream from vessels near the gums. This puts other organs, such as the lungs and kidneys, in risk of also getting an infection. WOOF.

Rex:
Woof. Woof. That sounds scary, CJ! One time my friend’s gums got really red and began to hurt him, woof. It hurt him so bad, he couldn’t eat sometimes! When his mom took him to the veterinarian it turns out he almost had gingivitis!

Whiskers:
I hear that most dental disease occurs below the gum line, where it’s harder to see. That’s why it’s so imperative to brush your teeth!

CJ:
Well said, Whiskers – sure glad you were able to be part of this conversation! If your parents have any questions about dental care, feel free to call the experienced veterinarians at Bulverde Animal Hospital for more information.

Keeping your Pet Healthy

We hope everyone had a happy holiday and is looking forward to the New Year! It’s CJ here with my good old pal Rex and we wanted to take some time to discuss our new year’s resolutions. Rex and I decided we’re going to be healthier in 2019 and wanted to remind all pet parents that we need their help to accomplish our goals!

Rex: Woof, woof! That’s right! My mom takes me over to the experts at Bulverde Animal Hospital for routine wellness checkups to monitor my health. Dr. Kothmann is the best and he makes sure I’m at a healthy weight and am eating right.

CJ: That’s great, Rex. A balanced diet is fundamental in keeping us healthy. Like our human companions, diet has a direct effect on our skin, coat, weight, and energy level. It’s important for our parents to research the ingredients of dog food before they buy it, or learn how to make a homemade diet!

Rex: Woof – my mom and I also go on long walks and play ball at the dog park. It’s so much fun and it’s a good way for me to release my energy.

CJ: We need at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day, so exercise is a great way to release some of that energy! However, being outside a lot means we’re more susceptible to fleas and ticks, so it’s important for our parents to take the proper preventative steps, such as vaccinations, to ensure we don’t get sick!

Rex: Woof, woof – you’re right, CJ! I had a tick once and boy did that hurt! My parents took me to Dr. Kothmann and he created a prevention plan that was best for me.

CJ: It sounds like the professional veterinarians at Bulverde Animal Hospital know what they’re talking about! If your parents have any additional questions regarding pet health, just have them give Bulverde a call – woof!

Food & Pet Safety

It’s hard to believe that it’s already August! Life is busy and summer can fly by in what feels like the blink of an eye. It’s CJ here and I’m hanging out with my friend Rex, relaxing and enjoying every last minute of summer weather. How about it, Rex?

Rex: Woof, summer is my favorite season…. woof woof!

CJ: You like being outside in the heat, Rex?

Rex: Yup, I love relaxing outside enjoying the marvelous weather, and eating some of my favorite food. Woof!

CJ: Fair enough – but us animals have to be careful about what we eat.

Rex: Woof woof! I didn’t know certain foods could give me tummy problems. My mom has our veterinarian make the right diet for me.

CJ: That’s great, Rex! We want to avoid eating raw foods because they contain germs like salmonella and listeria. Additionally, they have been found in raw pet food, and these bacteria can make us very sick.

Rex: I had no idea! I love raw meat - especially bones!

CJ: Sorry to burst your bubble Rex, but poultry, pork bones, or cooked bones of any kind can splinter into smaller pieces and can become a choking hazards, or worse, create damage to the throat or intestines!

Rex: That sounds serious! Woof!

CJ: It is serious, Rex! That’s why choosing a nutritionally balanced meal is important. We want to avoid foods with fat listed within the first four ingredients. I put together a list of poisonous foods I heard Bulverde’s doctors discussing recently.
  • Avocados
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Grapes & Raisins
  • Mike & Dairy
  • Onions/Garlic/Chives
  • Raw Meat
CJ: If your mom or dad has any questions regarding food & pet safety, just have them call Bulverde Animal Hospital. They’ll work with your parents to determine the best nutrition plan for you!

Keeping Pets Safe in the Hot Weather

Hi All! CJ here with my pal, Rex. This month we want to talk to you about how unseasonably hot it is outside! We’re used to hot weather here in Texas, but normally it doesn’t get this hot until August. Recently the temperature has hit 100 degrees during the day!

Rex: It’s hit 100 degrees? That’s HOT! My mom has been putting extra water out for me. It keeps me nice and cool. She also makes sure I don’t stay outside for too long. Woof woof! Especially when the sun is out!
CJ: Your mom is a smart lady, Rex. Did you know heat stroke is a big concern for pets that are outside all day?
Rex: What’s heat stroke?
CJ: Good question, Rex! Heat stroke is when your body temperature gets really high. Signs of heat stroke are confusion, agitation, and even coma!
Rex: Wow! That sounds serious, woof woof!
CJ: It is! In order to prevent heat stroke pets should stay indoors, preferably in an air conditioned home (well at least that’s my preference!), and drink plenty of water.
Rex: Good to know, woof woof! I’m thirsty just thinking about it!
CJ: Keep this in mind and be sure to tell all of your friends, if you ever get too hot and you feel sick, make sure your mom or dad brings you to Bulverde Animal Hospital in Bulverde TX!
Rex: Good thinking, CJ! Woof, woof! Now it’s time for a cool drink of water and a nap in my cool house!
CJ: Sounds good to me, Rex! Enjoy!

CJ and Rex Talk About Heartworm Disease Prevention

Hi Friends, CJ and Rex here! We’re happy because spring is finally here. The reason we're blogging today is because we want to talk to you about heartworm disease. Heartworm is no joke, and we want to make sure all of you know how heartworm disease can be prevented.

CJ:
Isn't that right, Rex?

Rex: Yeah, woof woof. Heartworm is a scary thing. We want all of our friends to be safe this season.

CJ: Rex, did you know the bite of an infected mosquito is what causes heartworm?

Rex: What?! I had no idea. I get mosquito bites all of the time. Oh man, that's scary.

CJ: Yes it is Rex. And since it’s impossible to tell which of the billions of mosquitos in Texas carry the disease, prevention is the best option!

Rex: For sure! CJ, I have a question?

CJ: What's up, Rex?

Rex: How do we prevent heartworm? If we can't prevent mosquito bites, what do we do?

CJ: Good questions, Rex! Surprisingly enough it’s pretty easy to prevent heartworm disease with the proper medications. A lot of veterinarians recommend being on the medication year round, then you’re always protected!

Rex: Oh! I take year around medication. I wonder if it’s for heartworms.

CJ: It probably is. Dr. Kothmann at Bulverde Animal Hospital is great and he makes sure his patients are up to date on their medications. Having said that, not everyone is on heartworm prevention medication, so be sure to send your friends to Dr. Kothmann. He will put them on the right medication and make sure they’re getting the protection they need.

Rex: I'm on it, CJ! Sounds like a good idea, woof woof!

CJ: I'm going to head out and tell all of my friends, too. Teamwork makes the dream work, Rex.

Rex: It sure does! Now I need a treat and a nap, woof woof!

Rex: Woof woof yay! I’m so happy to be a part of the Bulverde family and love celebrating all of our accomplishments over the years. I hope this means more treats from Dr. Kothmann!

CJ and Rex Talk about Heartworm

Hi Everyone, CJ and Rex here! We’re very excited because spring is almost here! Right Rex? “Yeah, woof woof! I like the sunshine and flowers and warm weather… and treats!” Treats? Rex, what does spring have to do with treats? “I dunno, I just like ‘em.” Alright well, the reason we’re here today is to talk to our friends about heartworm. It’s a scary thing and with spring right around the corner we want to make sure all of our friends are aware of how heartworm disease can be prevented. “Woof yeah we do! Better safe than sorry!” That’s right Rex!

I’m not sure how many of you know this, but the bite of an infected mosquito can cause heartworm. Since it’s impossible to tell which of the millions of mosquitos in TX carry the disease, prevention is the best option! “Woof, how do you prevent it? Woof” Good question, Rex! I’ll give you a treat for that later! It’s pretty easily prevented with proper medications. A lot of vets recommend being on the medication year round, then you’re always protected!

Rex, you and I are on heartworm prevention medication, so we’re all set, BUT not all of our friends are. I really think it’s our community duty to go around and remind all of our friends to have their mom and dad bring them to Dr. Kothmann at Bulverde Animal Hospital. He will put them on the right medication and make sure they’re getting the protection they need. Sounds like a good idea, woof woof! May I have my treat now?” Fine, Rex – all you think about is food! “Well, I’m protected from heartworm, so I don’t need to think about that.” Fair enough, Rex fair enough.

Why is it Warm Out?

Hi y’all! CJ here, and as always, I have my buddy Rex with me. “Woof woof – hi! I’m hungry. Do you have any treats?” Oh Rex, no I don’t – if you want we will swing by Bulverde Animal Hospital later to see if they have any dog treats for you. “Woof, woof sounds good!”

Alright, now that we have treat talk out of the way, let’s get into why we’re really here today – it’s warm out! Usually at this time of year I’d be sitting inside by the fireplace, maybe catching a mouse or two in the basement, but not this year! The other day it was 70 degrees outside! It was so warm I was chasing mice in the fields next to my house. Rex, have you noticed a difference? “Yup, it’s warm – I like it. Woof woof! The warmness is making me itchy, I don’t like that.” Itchy? Rex, do you think you might have fleas? It’s definitely warm enough outside for them to be making an appearance! “Uh oh, yikes! I think I do, woof woof!” Oh Rex, it’s okay, just have your mom bring you over to Bulverde Animal Hospital. They will have you feeling like new again in a few days! “Woof woof, okay. Do you think it will be cold this summer?” Well, Rex at the pace things are going right now I don’t know what to expect!

Bulverde Animal Hospital's Updated Hours

Hi All! CJ and Rex here! We’re so excited that it’s summer time! Hey Rex, do you have any big plans for the rest of the summer? “Yup, playing, eating and sleeping - woof woof!” Rex, that’s all you ever do! “Yup, it’s my favorite thing, so why would I change it?” Alright, I suppose you have a point…sigh! So Rex, my mom is so excited - since Bulverde Animal Hospital has extended hours she can really bring me in whenever is convenient for her. Summer is a busy time – work, the kids’ sports games and practice, vacations, play dates – my mom can’t keep up! BUT the one thing she doesn’t have to worry about is finding a time to bring me to the vet, which is a big relief for her. They extended their hours to 9:00 pm Monday – Friday! That means my mom has time to get home from work, have a quick dinner, drop the kids off at practice, and bring me for my check-up at 8:00 pm. It’s great – my mom is happy, which means she plays with me more – we both win! Rex, what are you doing? “Woof, woof – sniffing the grass, I smell food!” Oh Rex, please just TRY to remember to spread the word about the new hours. It will make all of our lives MUCH easier!

CJ and Rex Talk About Bulverde Animal Hospital’s New Hours!

Hi All! CJ and Rex here! We’ve been settling into fall nicely and LOVE the newest addition to the Bulverde Animal Hospital family, Dr. Bunting. Hey Rex, have you visited Dr. Bunting lately? “Yeah, woof woof, I like her. She gives me yummy treats.” Well, (CJ shakes his head) you sure do love those treats.

So Rex, I had a great experience the other day! Sometimes it can be real hard for my human to make an appointment for me to see one of the vets because she doesn’t get home from work until 7:00 pm, so usually she has to leave work early to bring me – that makes her super stressed and cranky! Well, let you tell me you, Rex – my human was in the greatest mood when she took me to Bulverde Animal Hospital the other day. It turns out they extended their hours to 9:00 pm Monday – Friday! That means my human had time to get home from work, have a quick dinner and bring me for my annual check-up at 8:00 pm. It was great – everyone was relaxed and not rushed.

Rex, are you listening to me? “Woof, woof yup – I heard something about your human having dinner. I love food!” Oh Rex, well just be sure to spread the word about the new hours. It will make all of our lives MUCH easier!
